Expedition Intensity: Medium-High Physical Intensity
To be completely transparent - we need you to be fit and healthy enough to move in a thick wetsuit, withstand water temps of 4-6 degrees, climb in and out of a zodiac, live on a boat in various conditions AND cope with 14-18 hours of darkness each day.
Let’s break it down. We would love you to apply if:
You're an ocean and nature lover. You’re open to rolling with the unpredictable.
You're interactive, patient, and respectful in a group setting.
You have total respect for the animals and share our belief in never forcing an interaction.
You value the safety and wellbeing of the group AND the animals.
You're very comfortable in deep water.
You're a strong, fit swimmer in deep, choppy water. You can swim 200+m in mixed ocean conditions with speed.
You’re able to lift and lower your body weight over the side of a small boat.
Medically fit - we require everyone to complete a medical statement and we may require clearance from a doctor.
Minimum 18 years of age.
-
Immersia was created to stand out in an industry that was full of competition, elitism, ego and self-promotion.
Our values are personal transformation, community, and a deep respect for nature. We want our expedition guests to feel fully alive and brimming with awe.
We’re selective with every destination, partner, and team members.
We know we’re not the cheapest, but we’re also not a casual meetup or a content creator asking you to fund our aventures. We’re professional facilitators dedicated to making your trip seamless and unforgettable.
When you travel with us, you can expect:
Small groups (6–12 people)
24-hour on-site support so you’re never left to figure things out alone
Secure, simple bookings with no random bank transfers
Consistent communication before and during your trip
Qualified, insured, experienced facilitators
Licensed, safety-focused operators
Plenty of laughter, dancing, and ways to connect as a group.
We don’t say this lightly: we run one of the safest and most professional freediving retreat operations in the world because we listen, research, and never stop improving.

Aside from experiencing life on a luxe ice-breaker ship in the Arctic, there are two strategic reasons why we opt for a Liveaboard for this particular expedition:
We maximise our time on the water (& in the wild). Quite literally 100% of your time will be immersed in the arctic ocean and beautiful fjords of Tromso. You don’t have to be on the Zodiacs (the smaller boats) all day to experience the ocean and it’s wildlife as you would by simply booking day tours!
It’s more ethical: by being ‘out at sea’, we don’t contribute to the numbers of tour boats that operate by the shore following the wildlife. This way, we don’t crowd the animals and interactions are more organic (we don’t chase, we attract!).
-
There are so many freediving retreat options out there. Let's make sure we are a good fit!
We pride ourselves on having the best customer experience in the freediving industry, so you can expect a smooth booking process, lots of communication, and dedicated 24h engagement from the team on retreat.
We’re a value-led company and everything we do reflects these values; please check them out!
We won’t force animal interactions for photos.
We rise early, dive a lot, have a lot of fun, and go to bed pretty early. It's probably not the one if you want to party hard.
The majority of our guests are in the 25-45 age range, but we host all ages 18+, so please expect variety!
Our customer base is primarily Australian, but we love hosting guests from all over the world.
We’re LGBTQIA+ friendly.
We really, really, really value great group dynamics and we are grateful for respectful, tolerant, drama-free people!
The atmosphere is often playful and silly - dancing, games, human pyramids, sports, dirty jokes. If this isn’t your vibe, there may be a better fit for you…
We pride ourselves on being an inclusive, supportive, and super friendly place. Our guests are all treated equally. However, if you feel you may need additional levels of personal support, please contact us first for an honest discussion about how we can facilitate this.

We’ve been doing this for a while. We know that it’s the PEOPLE, not the wildlife/weather/accommodation/etc. that will make this a life-changing trip.
This is one of our more high-stakes, high-intensity expeditions, and we want to make sure you’re ready for this kind of adventure!
When we review applications we’re asking ourselves 3 questions:-
Is your ocean experience and skill a good match for this?
Do we share similar values around wildlife interaction and group dynamics?
Do we fit with what you’re looking for?!
The application process is NOT about assessing your IG follower number or cool you are; it’s about us being super honest and ensuring that you’re going to get the most of of this adventure!
Trust us - this small extra effort on both sides means that you can turn up confident in the knowledge that you’ll be at the right level, with great people, who are all on the same page.

EWAN DONNACHIE
Expedition Host & Photographer
Renowned Wildlife Cinematographer
I’m a lifelong ocean and nature lover, spending my childhood exploring the natural world and starting my career as an Australian professional Bodyboarder.
Growing up on the coast of New South Wales, I spent my early years exploring nature, chasing waves and developing a passion for the natural world. Pushing myself to ride some of the most dangerous waves in the world, like those at Shipstern Bluff and Tahiti’s Teahupo’o, taught me how to navigate extreme environments. My transition into cinematography felt natural.
Today, I work as a wildlife cinematographer, shooting on projects with BBC Natural History, Netflix, Nat Geo and Disney+. I’ve been lucky to access some of the rarest and most remotely located animal behaviours, and have grown a deep appreciation for the beauty and fragility of the natural world.
I’ve been with Immersia since day 1 as head photographer, host and freediving instructor. I love to co-host our wildlife-focused trips and retreats, capturing the best moments and guiding our guests on how have positive, respectful and ethical interactions.
I’ve already spent time filming Orcas and Humpbacks in Arctic Norway for an IMAX film production, and can tell you there isn’t another experience like it. Add in the possibility of Northern Lights and there’s nowhere else I’d want to be!
BELLA MASSEY
Founder of Immersia Freediving
For me, ocean adventure travel embodies the joy I’ve found in this world: feeling alive, connected, and high on awe.
In 2017 moved from London to Sydney’s Bondi Beach. I was living a corporate, urban existence as a management consultant.. Moving to the beach opened up the perfect opportunity to take up a new water sport. I chose freediving (tbh it was advanced snorkelling).
To be clear, I was TERRIFIED of deep water, currents, waves and sharks. Freediving didn’t come naturally. However, as I grew more confident I found a deep sense of physical freedom. Freediving felt like dancing without gravity. Silently observing the underwater world as a visitor felt so calming. I made some of my closest friends (and my husband) in Sydney’s freediving community.
I felt I could help regular land dwelling people discover the ocean and transform their physical, mental and social health. So, in 2020, I took the biggest leap of faith of my life and walked away from my career to start Immersia Freediving.
4 years on, we have grown faster than I ever imagined. We’ve been lucky enough to teach over 1000 people to freedive and we have now hosted snorkelling, swimming and freediving expeditions in some of the world’s most beautiful places.
Mads is the one who started it all. After completing his engineering degree, he realized his true passion was working in and on the ocean. He became a dive instructor, commercial skipper, and dive center manager in South Africa and Mozambique before launching his first dive travel agency in 2005. That agency has since grown into the largest dive travel company in Scandinavia.
Mads' greatest passion has always been large marine animals and in 2014, he began operating Orca swim expeditions in Arctic Norway. After organizing and leading countless dive trips and big animal expeditions around the world, he is now dedicated to welcoming Orca swimmers to Norway.

“Why Norway?”
When I say this is a dream come true, I mean it in every sense of the word. Since I was a young child I’ve been drawn to the snowy, icy magic of the North. Stories about auroras, tiny fishing villages and arctic wildlife have always captivated me.
My first visit came in 2013 to meet with my clients (the corporate days). I explored Tromso, took a boat from Ålesund to Bergen, a train to Oslo and ended up hiking in Rogaland. It lit me on fire, and I’ve been lucky enough to explore much more of Norway in the last 11 years. I even named my dog after the Norwegian island of Senja.
If ever you’ve felt an inexplicable connection to a place, you’ll know what I mean. Who knows where this came from. My mum says ‘past life’. My sister says ‘never got out of my ‘Frozen’ phase’
So, as we’ve been working on this trip for the last few months I’ve felt the excitement of a child bubbling up. I can’t wait to share this magical place.

FAQs
-
We follow the general guidelines in the region for orca/whale watching and swimming.
This allows for the best animal interaction and most importantly leaves as little impact on the wildlife as possible.
Our approach to the animals is with patience and respect. We do not chase or harass whales, nor do we make drops directlyin front of travelling whales. This means that sometimes we will follow the orcas/whales at a distance for a while, hoping to get the right opportunity to quietly join them in their world.
Sometimes we do not get that opportunity and will enjoy the whale’s topside. A thorough briefing on the guidelines along with “do’s and don’ts” will be given in the beginning of the trip. -
No. Wildlife interactions can NEVER be guaranteed, at least not ethically.
Please note that this is an expedition in search of wildlife.
We will do everything in our power to provide you with the best possible experiences, but we cannot guarantee any encounter with a wild animal nor guarantee any specific experience with a wild animal. If the weather prevents us from conducting our programme, we will do our best to plan other activities.
NOTE: The ocean is unpreditable! If you’re looking for a manufactured +. guaranteed interaction it might not be the trip for you!
Unfortunately we cannot offer credits or refunds if we’re unlucky with wildlife or ocean conditions.
-
One of our core values is "Don't sh*t where you eat". We are very serious about Marine Conservation and Animal Welfare.
We partner with a licensed, very experienced and respected local operator who has been running tours in the Arctic for many years.
We comply with all permit limitations and ethical standards of wildlife interactions, including minimum distances for boats AND swimmers.
When we interact with wildlife on any of our trips, we do so in a way that does not negatively impact the animals. Everything takes place on the animal’s terms. If it chooses to interact with us, we will be stoked. However, we will never chase or force the interaction.
Many believe that we should 'leave wildlife alone', and for good reason. However we sadly live in a world where coastal nations will continue to exploit the oceans for economic gain regardless. Ecotourism, such as whale swimming, provides an avenue for communities to benefit from the ocean in way that:
inspires the public to protect the ocean
doesn't harm any animal or ecosystem
creates strong ocean advocates in our guests
-
As you can imagine, the water temperature is VERY COLD in the Arctic - between 4-6 degrees C.
We recommend 7-9mm 2 piece freediving wetsuit. Open Cell is better.
We also recommend pairing it with thick neoprene socks & mitts- 5mm+.
All available for rental with at least 3 months notice (see our package in the next FAQ).
-
Arctic Gear Rental Packages are available to all guests!
Our Equipment Rental Package includes everything you will need for diving in the arctic (arctic freedive wetsuit with hood, socks, mitts, fins, mask, snorkel, crocs, windproof poncho). The cost for the package is $500 USD.
It's OKAY if you're not sure just yet. You will reach out 6 months before the expedition for a final call-out for rental packages, plus we'll be confirming sizes!
Please note: the company we work with doesn't rent out bits and pieces, e.g. if you have everything but a windproof poncho and mitts, they won't be able to rent out just those two. To put it simply: it's all or nothing with the rental package!
-
Travel insurance is mandatory and self-funded.
At minimum, your policy needs to cover:
• Travel cancellations and delays
• Loss/delay of luggage
• Accidents and injury, including snorkelling & diving.
We will need proof of:
Your insurance company
Your insurance policy number
We are affiliated with DiveAssure and suggest checking them out for comprehensive dive and travel insurance designed for divers.
You will also need to sign our 2 liability releases to acknowledge the risk of swimming in the arctic with whales, plus the risks of being on a liveaboard ship at sea.
-
Our ship is docked centrally in Tromso but exact location of the ship will only be known later due to port authorities. We will inform you of the location via e-mail a few days before tripstart.
Please note: airport shuttles and pre-trip transport is not included.
Don’t worry if you’re travelling solo - once we have guest numbers confirmed we will create a WhatsApp group to organise car pooling/ share accommodation etc. pre-trip to make things more economical for you.
We recommend staying in the local town Tromso before boarding the ship:
We recommend you stay in a centrally located hotel before Day 1 since this is the nicest area of Tromso, and it should then be walking distance to where the ship is docked.
Some recommended central hotels are Scandic Grand, Scandic Ishavshotel, Radisson Blu Hotel and Clarion Hotel the Edge.
Please note:
Embarking must be done between 4-5 pm. The ship is planned to leave the port soon after.
Disembarking is after breakfast latest at 9 am.
-
There is access to Wi-Fi on the Liveaboard Ship, but connection and speed are limited so don’t expect to upload/download lots of footage or movies.
Normally there is cellphone signal during most of the trip.
-
