OCEAN EXPEDITION INTENSITY SCALE

FIND YOUR FIT

Here's the thing … not every ocean expedition is the same, and that's exactly how it should be. We want you to know exactly what you're signing up for than show up on day one feeling out of your depth (pun fully intended).

So we built this scale. Five levels, from Ocean Curious right through to Ocean Native. Have a read, be honest with yourself about where you land, and then jump down to see which of our expeditions match. If you're still not sure, our quick quiz can help — or just flick us a message, we're always happy to chat it through.

Ocean Curious

For true beginners

This one's for anyone who's looked at the ocean and thought "I'd love to feel more at home out there," even if you've never put your face in open water before. No freediving experience. None. Zero. If you can swim 50m without stopping and you're keen to feel calm floating and snorkelling, you're exactly who this level is for.

We don't currently have an Immersia expedition or course that fits at this level (even our beginner freediving courses ask for a 200m swim to start). So if this sounds like you right now, our best advice is to spend some time exploring ocean swimming lessons or training in your local area first. Build up your distance, get comfortable in open water, and get to know how your body feels out there. Once you're swimming 200m comfortably, come back and have a look at Level 2, we'd love to have you.

Physical
Can swim 50m without stopping
Ocean experience
No freediving experience
Ocean confidence
Comfortable floating and snorkelling

Ocean Ready

Some ocean experience

You've spent time in the water. Maybe you've snorkelled reefs, swum in open water, dipped a toe into freediving basics, you're not brand new to this, and the ocean doesn't intimidate you the way it might have once. If you can swim 200m comfortably and you're happy in open water (a bit of current doesn't faze you), this is your level.

This is the sweet spot for people who want their first taste of a proper expedition, somewhere big, wild and a little bit "pinch me," without needing advanced freediving skills just yet.

Physical
Can swim 200m comfortably (minimum)
Ocean experience
Advanced snorkelling experience
Ocean confidence
Happy in open water, some current ok

Ocean Confident

Solid ocean swimmer, some freediving

This is where things start to feel a little more "freediver" and a little less "tourist." You're a strong swimmer (200m continuously, no worries) and freediving isn't new to you, you're comfortable getting down to 6m or more, and long days in the ocean don't wreck you. Surge, mild current, a bit of swell? All fine.

Most of our expeditions sit at this level, and for good reason. It's where freediving really starts to open up the ocean to you. You're ready for bigger animals, deeper water, and longer days, while still being well within what our team can comfortably support.

Physical
Can swim 200m continuously and can freedive
Ocean experience
Comfortable freediving 6m+
Ocean confidence
Comfortable with surge, mild current and long days

Ocean Explorer

Regular freedivers

You're not just dabbling anymore, freediving is a real part of your life. You're swimming 200m+ easily, you're comfortable at 10m depth, and you've clocked up 20+ dives. Challenging conditions don't rattle you, and neither do long, full-on days in the water.

Expeditions at this level move quicker, go deeper, and ask more of you physically, but they also reward you with experiences most people will never get close to. Think colder water, bigger animals, and conditions that demand real ocean confidence.

Physical
Can swim 200m+ easily; comfortable at 10m depth
Ocean experience
Active freediving practice; 20+ dives completed
Ocean confidence
Confident in challenging conditions and long days

Ocean Native

Experienced freedivers

This is the top of our scale, for the divers who feel more at home underwater than most people feel on land. You're swimming 200m with ease, comfortable at 15m+ depth, and blue water diving (open ocean, no bottom in sight, just you and the deep) doesn't faze you one bit.

Strong current, big swells, low visibility, ridiculously long days, you've done it all before, and you're calm through it. We don't currently have an expedition rated specifically at this level, but if you're an Ocean Native, you're exactly the kind of person we love having along on our Level 4 trips, and we'd love to hear from you about what you're after next.

Physical
Can swim 200m; comfortable at 15m+ depth
Ocean experience
Advanced freediving background; comfort with blue water diving
Ocean confidence
Calm in strong current, swells, low viz and super long days
